1:04

Hey, welcome back to another episode

1:12

of the Mindful Balance podcast.

1:15

So something happened to me the other day

1:18

and that is what gave me the idea

1:21

of sharing this topic with you today.

1:24

There I was, I was just having one of those days,

1:27

you know, the type that every little thing seemed to go wrong.

1:32

I not only spilled my morning coffee,

1:36

in fact, the entire mug broke,

1:40

and I started the day with a giant mess to clean,

1:44

especially since, I don't know if you know,

1:46

I have two cats and I had to make sure

1:49

that there were just no pieces of glass

1:52

anywhere in the kitchen.

1:53

I also had two doctor appointments that morning, back to back, and I just started feeling the

2:00

stress building up.

2:01

When I finally got home from running all the errands, it was hot, so I walked into the

2:08

house, I kicked off my shoes, and I felt a wave of exhaustion just wash over me.

2:16

I made my way to the kitchen, I opened the fridge, and you know what I saw, because it's

2:22

either one or the other. For me, it was a delicious homemade brownie that I made

2:28

just a few days earlier. We went to visit my son at camp and we had a few brownies

2:34

left and they were right there in my refrigerator looking at me. Now, I talk a

2:39

lot about mindful eating and I really try to practice what I preach but at

2:45

that moment all I wanted was to get that brownie in my mouth. I just did not care

2:52

about anything else. And the stress of the day just had me needing that comfort

2:58

that I naturally associated with that rich creamy chocolate treat. So this is

3:05

what happened. I took two pieces of brownies and I sat down with it and I

3:11

I took one bite and it was good.

3:15

And before I knew it, the two pieces were gone.

3:19

And you know what?

3:20

I didn't feel great about it.

3:22

I knew I had let my emotions dictate my eating, something that I've been trying to improve

3:29

now for years and years.

3:31

But then I also realized something.

3:34

This was really an opportunity, a chance to practice being mindful and understand my triggers.

3:44

So this is what I did.

3:46

I put a timer for 10 minutes and I decided that I am just going to sit with it.

3:53

I acknowledged my feelings and that buildup of stress and really just the exhaustion.

4:02

I decided at that moment that I am just going to make myself a cup of iced coffee.

4:08

I'm going to sit on the couch and I'm just going to take a few minutes just to relax,

4:14

just to be until the 10 minutes timer was going off.

4:19

And I'm telling you this story because the journey of mindful eating is not about getting it right

4:28

or being perfect. It's about being aware and really learn to understand your body and your

4:36

emotions and finding that balance that no matter how many times you might lose it along the way,

4:44

we're really all humans and we just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

4:52

There's always going to be days of stress, sadness, or just straight out boredom.

4:59

We may be frustrated with other people in our life, we may be just frustrated with ourselves,

5:05

we may not feel good, and every time we feel that way, it is just an opportunity to practice

5:13

behaving and taking different actions.

5:16

So why should we pay more attention to our eating habits and our behavior patterns?

5:22

Why is it that mindful eating is even important?

5:27

Imagine that you are at a concert.

5:30

The lights are dimmed, the crowd is waving, and the band comes on stage.

5:37

I personally never really played an instrument other than maybe that one year that I attempted

5:44

to learn how to play guitar.

5:46

It didn't work, but I know that each musician has a specific role.

5:53

Each instrument contributes to the overall harmony of the music.

5:58

So now imagine if the drummer in that concert just started playing without coordinating

6:06

with the rest of the band.

6:07

Or if the lady playing the piano just decided to ignore the rhythm of the bass player, what

6:15

would you get? An annoyed audience, for sure. Well, our eating habits can be seen in the same light.

6:24

When we eat mindlessly, it's like we are letting each "musician" do their own thing without any

6:34

synchronization. We're not listening to the music our body is trying to create. We consume food

6:42

without paying attention to our body's needs and without consideration of the rhythm of our hunger

6:49

and fullness cues. On the other hand, mindful eating is like being the conductor of this

6:57

orchestra. Every bite that we take, every choice we make, and I'm not trying to make this sound

7:04

like a song. It's about creating a beautiful symphony of health and well-being and satisfaction.

7:14

So how do we go from mindless to mindful eating? What are some simple things that you can do to

7:24

start changing your eating habits as soon as today? Well, I've got three tips for you. These are tips

7:33

for things that you can start doing right now. And you can use that to bring more mindfulness

7:41

to your meals. Let's get into it. So tip number one is slowing down. Now I know life is busy

7:51

and sometimes it feels like we just don't have time to sit down and take our sweet time eating.

7:58

But eating isn't just about getting food into our bodies.

8:03

So next time, I want to offer you this strategy.

8:07

Next time you eat, I want you to take a bite, put your fork down, and then really taste your food.

8:15

I know it sounds very, almost too simplistic, but I want you to chew it.

8:22

Chew it slowly, and then take another bite.

8:25

And you might be surprised how much more you enjoy your food when you eat this way,

8:32

since it really gives your body the time to acknowledge the flavors and the consistency

8:40

and the temperature and the colors and everything that's involved in the sensation of eating.

8:47

Tip number two. Let's bring some gratitude to your meals.

8:52

And I know again that this might sound a bit out there, but before you dismiss it, just give me a second here.

9:01

Before you start eating, I want you to take a moment and think about your food.

9:07

Think about all the work that went into bringing that food to your plate.

9:13

Maybe you cooked it yourself. Maybe someone else did.

9:17

Maybe it came from a local farm or maybe traveled from another state or another country.

9:25

There are so many people that are involved in getting our food to us and taking even 30 seconds

9:34

to acknowledge that can really change your relationship with what you eat.

9:41

It can help us see food as something to be enjoyed and appreciated and not just something

9:48

to be feared of or feel guilty about. That takes me to tip number three. Start tuning into your

9:58

body's signals. And I am saying start because this is again a long journey of learning. One of the

10:07

keys to mindful eating is learning to listen to our bodies. Our bodies are smarter than we give

10:15

them credit for. We were born with all the knowledge to know when and how much we need.

10:22

Your body knows when you're hungry and when you're full, when you need energy and when you need other

10:30

nutrients, but often we're just not very good at listening. So for example, we eat

10:37

because it's mealtime or because there is food in front of us or maybe someone

10:44

brought food to work and offered us a donut. Sometimes we eat because we're

10:49

bored or stressed, but what if, what if you ate only when you were hungry and

10:57

and stop when you are full?

11:00

What if you gave your body what it needs when they need it?

11:05

So I am going to leave you with these three tips

11:11

and hopefully some food for thought.

11:15

I hope that it will encourage you and inspire you

11:20

and maybe even motivate you to just pay attention

11:26

a little closer to what is happening.

11:28

What does your body need?

11:30

When does your body have enough?

11:32

And just experiment with that and see how it feels.

11:37

All right, my friends, that's all for today's episode.

11:41

Remember, moving from mindless to mindful eating

11:45

isn't like turning a light switch on and off.

11:49

I would say that it is a lot more like a volume dial

11:54

that you can dial up and down.

11:56

And it's okay to take it one step at a time.

11:59

It's okay to stumble and make mistakes

12:04

because the important thing is that you are trying,

12:09

that you are taking steps to take care of yourself

12:12

and your body.

12:13

I am so excited to continue this journey with you.

12:17

So stay tuned for the next episode

12:20

where we will be talking more about nutrition

12:24

and how to make sense of all the different diets out there.

12:28

Until then, keep moving forward,

12:30

keep seeking the mindful balance.
